The Raza Foundation and Vadehra Art Gallery are pleased to announce the publication of S H Raza Catalogue 1972 – 1989 (Volume II).
Volume I, which covered the years 1958 to 1971, was published in 2016. It was the first-ever catalogue raisonné to be compiled of any Indian artist. It was our pleasure that Sayed Haider Raza got to see the publication before his passing in the summer of that year. Both Volume I and Volume II contain several hundred artworks together with illustrations of each and information about the provenance, literature and exhibitions that they were featured in.
There are plans to publish further volumes over the coming years. Volume V is currently under production and will cover Raza’s final years in New Delhi from 2011 to 2016. With The Raza Foundation’s comprehensive cataloguing of his works during this time, this volume could be completed in a more straight forward manner and hence published more imminently. We will then return to the more painstaking and longer task of compiling Volume III, covering the years 1990 – 1999, Volume IV for the years 2000 – 2010, as well as a volume covering his early works from circa 1940 to 1957. With such a long artistic career and with over three thousand works currently on file in various stages of completion it has, and continues to be, a lengthy process.
Each volume will be updated in the future as new information comes to light, with new expanded editions being released. We therefore continue to look for the help of collectors, institutions, galleries and auctions houses to support our endeavour. We encourage them to contact us about the works they hold or have sold, to add, confirm, or rectify the information we hold.
The aim is to be able to present a compendium of volumes covering an oeuvre of over seven decades which will establish beyond doubt the works that belong to Raza’s output as an artist. We hope it will prove to be a valuable resource for the art market and anyone with a serious interest in the artist’s work. The compendium will also hopefully be a great tool for visually studying the evolution of Raza’s style over time. Likewise, with the inclusion of quotes and archive material, it can be way to gain greater understanding of his work and his thoughts behind them.
